Teeth whitening, over the years has become a common procedure in the field of cosmetic dentistry and over the last few years at-home teeth whitening has become very popular.
As we get older our teeth often become darker due to changes in the mineral structure of our teeth.
Our teeth can also become stained by foodstuffs, drinks, mouth bacteria, tobacco and certain types of antibiotics.
Today we are more conscious about our looks and the need to have a whiter, brighter smile. Therefore a new market for teeth whitening has developed.
Teeth whitening can be carried out using the following teeth whitening methods: teeth whitening strips, whitening pen, whitening gel, laser whitening, and natural bleaching.
In the past, at-home teeth whitening was done with bleaching gel which was applied to the teeth using thin guard trays. In recent years at-home teeth whitening has been carried out by applying small strips - covered in bleaching gel - over the teeth, usually for 30 minutes each day for 14 days.
The benefits of these teeth whitening strips as opposed to the thin guard trays is that you can still speak and move around.
Another popular teeth whitening procedure is laser bleaching or laser teeth whitening. Laser teeth whitening uses light energy to accelerate the process of the bleaching and has to be carried out at in a dental surgery. The effects of bleaching can last for several months, but may vary depending on the lifestyle of the patient.
Factors which will decrease whitening include smoking and the ingestion of dark colored liquids like coffee, tea and red wine.
A typical 14 day course of teeth whitening can produce dramatic improvements in the cosmetic appearance of most stained teeth; however, some stains do not respond to bleaching.
Tetracycline (antibiotics) staining may require prolonged bleaching, as it takes longer for the bleach to reach the dentine layer.
Teeth whitening is most effective with yellow discolored teeth.
Laser teeth whitening, also known as power bleaching, uses light energy to accelerate the process of bleaching in a dental surgery. Different types of energy can be used in this procedure. The ideal source of energy should be high energy to excite the peroxide molecules without overheating the pulp of the tooth, creating an inflammatory response. Most laser teeth whitening treatments can be done in approximately 1 hour, in a single visit to a dental physician.
Teeth whitening is also not recommended in pregnant or lactating women.
Teeth whitening does not usually change the color of fillings and other restorative materials. Teeth whitening does not affect porcelain, other ceramics, or dental gold.
However,it can slightly affect restorations made with composite materials, cements and dental amalgams. Teeth whitening can restore color of fillings, porcelain, and other ceramics when they become stained by foods, drinks, and smoking etc.
Whitening toothpaste typically has small particles of silica, aluminum oxide, calcium carbonate, or calcium phosphate to grind off stains formed by colored molecules that have lodged onto the teeth from food. Unlike bleaches, whitening toothpaste does not alter the intrinsic color of teeth.
